How Long Does a U.S. Trademark Take to Register?

Honest expectations, not a marketing promise.

Trademark applications can take many months, and sometimes longer, to reach registration. There's no fixed number we can promise — but here's what actually drives the timeline.

Factors that affect processing time

  • Current USPTO examination workload, which changes over time
  • Whether your application draws an Office Action requiring a response
  • Whether additional information or clarification is requested
  • Whether a third party formally opposes the application during publication
  • Whether you filed on a use basis or an intent-to-use basis (which adds a proof-of-use step)

Why we won't quote you a fixed number

Some services advertise "registered in 6 months" or similar. We don't, because it isn't a promise anyone can honestly make — timelines depend on the USPTO, not on us. What we do provide is active status monitoring and clear updates.

For the most current, official processing-time data, see the USPTO's trademark processing times page.

What you can control

  • Filing a clean, well-prepared application reduces the chance of an early Office Action.
  • A thorough search before filing reduces the chance of a conflict-based refusal.
  • Responding promptly to any USPTO correspondence keeps your case moving.
