Word Mark vs Logo Trademark: Which Should You File?

Understanding the trade-offs before you decide.

What is a word mark?

A word mark (also called a standard character mark) protects the text of your brand name itself — regardless of font, color, or styling. If your name changes visual presentation over time but the words stay the same, a word mark generally still covers it.

What is a logo (design) mark?

A design mark protects the specific visual presentation of your logo — its particular stylization, imagery, colors (if claimed), and layout. It does not automatically cover the underlying words if you later change the design significantly.

Can you file both?

Yes — many businesses file a word mark for the name itself and, separately or combined, a design mark for a distinctive logo. This provides broader coverage but also means preparing (and potentially defending) more than one filing.

Which should you choose first?

  • If your name is the core of your brand and your logo design may evolve, prioritize the word mark.
  • If your logo is highly distinctive and central to recognition (think of a specific icon or symbol), a design mark adds real value.
  • If budget is tight, a single word mark often gives the broadest practical protection to start.
